It’s not just some random quirk they decided to throw in! If you haven’t read Venom: The Hunger (edit: it’s also mentioned in at least one other comic) you wouldn’t know this, but the reason the symbiote craves brains is because they contain phenethylamine. Apparently it’s abundant on the symbiote’s home planet, and it’s what makes brains so tasty (in the symbiote’s opinion at least)
You know what else contains phenethylamine? Chocolate. That’s why Venom loves it so much. (Edited to add this image from Venom: Sign of the Boss)
Another fun fact? Phenethylamine is one of the chemicals produced when you’re in love. Eddie points this out and says that he hadn’t been giving the symbiote what it needed, and that he promised it wouldn’t happen again.
